Morning & Evening Adhkar for Beginners

Adhkar are short phrases of remembrance that protect and centre a Muslim through the day. This beginner guide covers the idea, the timing, and a few everyday phrases to start with.

What are adhkar?

Dhikr means remembrance of Allah. The morning and evening adhkar are collections of short, beautiful phrases recited after Fajr (morning) and after Asr / before Maghrib (evening) to begin and end the day in remembrance.

Phrases to start with

Three of the most common phrases of dhikr are: SubhanAllah โ€” 'Glory be to Allah'; Alhamdulillah โ€” 'All praise is for Allah' (Quran 1:2); and Allahu Akbar โ€” 'Allah is the Greatest'. Repeating these is a simple, powerful habit.

For protection before sleep, the last three surahs โ€” Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas โ€” are recited (Bukhari).

Everyday duas

Small duas tie daily life to Allah: 'Bismillah' before eating, 'Alhamdulillah' after. Building these in turns ordinary moments into worship.

Make it a habit with a daily quiz

The hardest part is consistency. A short daily quiz on duas and their meanings keeps them fresh and builds the habit gently.
