How to Learn the 99 Names of Allah

The 99 Names of Allah (Asma ul-Husna) describe Allah's perfect attributes. Learning their meanings is a beloved act of worship โ€” here's how to do it without feeling overwhelmed.

Start with the meanings, not just the words

It is far easier to remember a name when you understand it. Ar-Rahman means 'The Most Compassionate'; Ar-Raheem means 'The Most Merciful'; Al-Malik means 'The King'. Connecting each name to its meaning makes it stick.

Reflecting on the meanings also deepens your relationship with Allah, which is the real goal (Quran 7:180).

Learn in small groups of five

Trying to memorise all 99 at once is daunting. Learn five at a time, review them the next day, then add five more. Spaced review โ€” coming back to them after a day, then a few days โ€” locks them into memory.

Use them in du'a

Allah says to call on Him by His beautiful names (Quran 7:180). When you ask for mercy, say 'Ya Rahman'; when you ask for provision, 'Ya Razzaq'. Using the names keeps them alive in your heart.

Test yourself little and often

Quizzing is one of the most effective ways to remember. A quick daily quiz on the meanings beats re-reading a list. Try the 99 Names quiz and see how many you can recall.
